# Getting started

The CIAM functionality sits at the core of the Veriam platform. Follow the steps below to start utilizing Veriam's identity and access management capabilities.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Connect your application

Connect your application with Veriam to enable us to handle all your access needs and requirements. Veriam uses OpenID Connect as authentication protocol.

See the [Connect your application](/for-providers/ciam/connect-your-application.md) section for a step-for-step instruction on how to configure your application.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Setup access controls

Veriam offers different options to setting up your access control. You can for instance use roles (with or without permissions) or more advanced policies and combine these with free or paid subscriptions.

Determine what determines if users should get access to your applications and then simply configure Veriam accordingly. See the section [Set up access controls](/for-providers/ciam/set-up-access-controls.md) for more information.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Provide access to your customers

Finally, your customers need to be provided with access to your applications. Depending on what access controls you have configured, there are different options available to achieve this. See the [Provide access to customers](/for-providers/ciam/provide-access-to-customers.md)section for a more detailed description.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.myveriam.com/for-providers/ciam/getting-started.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
